Myth vs. Fact in a Post Roe World

On June 24, 2022, Roe v Wade was overturned by the US Supreme Court. Since that time, Sav-A-Life has seen some shifts in the clients we see and the services they’re looking to receive. However, our ministry has not changed. There are many myths out there about the “Post Roe World” and we hope the following videos will help discern what is myth vs. what is fact.

Myth #1: Since abortion is illegal in Alabama, the threat abortion is gone.

Fact: Access is limited and still available in nearby states. Although abortion is illegal in Alabama, nearby states still offer abortions. Unfortunately, our client, Tara, made the decision to go through with an abortion at a clinic in Georgia and Alison, one of our ultrasound nurses, recounts Tara’s story from her perspective. When clients do not make a life-affirming decision, they are still welcomed at Sav-A-Life. Here they are still offered hope, compassion, and of course, the love of Christ by each of our staff and volunteers. Now more than ever, there is an urgency to share the truth of life-affirming decisions with each and every one of our clients. Take a look at a this video as Alison shares her story walking alongside Tara.

Myth #2: If abortion is illegal in Alabama, services provided by pregnancy test centers are not as needed.

Fact: The need for the services offered through Sav-A-Life’s pregnancy test centers is ever greater! Each of our three pregnancy test centers – in Vestavia, Fultondale, and Crestwood – are continuing to welcome clients each day with compassion, help, and hope. The number of clients that are seen each year continues to increase, and as we hope and pray for more women to make life-affirming decisions, the need for our education and mentoring services continues to grow more and more.

Myth #3: Since abortion is illegal in Alabama, Sav-A-Life medical clinics slowing down.

Fact: Our clinics are busier than ever. Medical services are typically our first point of contact. However, we are seeing more clients than need post-abortion follow-up care. Dr. Batson is an OB/GYN in Birmingham, Sav-A-Life volunteer, and our current president of the Board of Directors. She shares the wide array of medical services provided to women at the Sav-A-Life medical clinics as well as her role when speaking to women who are abortion-minded or abortion-vulnerable. Additionally, Dr. Batson shares that just in the last few months, after Roe v. Wade was overturned, there have been an influx in the number of women she has seen at Sav-A-Life who have come in for post-abortion medical care because they’re not able to get it at the out-of-state abortion clinics they’ve gone to, and how she and other volunteers have a unique opportunity to share the hope of Christ in such a hard circumstance to women who are truly hurting and in need.

Myth #4: Since abortion is illegal in Alabama, more people inclined to continue a pregnancy.

Fact: The struggle with an unplanned pregnancy is still the same. Our services are needed more than ever. One of our client advocate volunteers, Jessica, shares how fear, a sense of urgency, and desperation are more real now than ever before among our clients. Clients are feeling more rushed to make a decision because of the changes in the laws since the overturn of Roe v. Wade in June of this year. Jessica shares common reasons she’s heard from clients for considering an abortion, and how more often than not, clients are fearful and in desperate need of compassion and hope. Sav-A-Life offers the hope of the gospel, but also provides tangible ways to come alongside clients and care for them as they become parents and raise their children.
