More Than a Heartbeat: Shanell’s Story

When Shanell first walked into Sav-A-Life at 17, her life was spinning with questions. She came to confirm her pregnancy, carrying the weight of a fragile relationship with her mom and pressure from her baby’s father to end the pregnancy. Her only support was her aunt, who had graciously opened her home to Shanell. But from the moment she stepped through Sav-A-Life’s doors, Shanell found something she’d been missing: a lifeline, a community, and a reason to hope.

Looking back on her early days of motherhood, Shanell feels a deep gratitude. “I had nothing,” she remembers. “No baby clothes, no diapers, wipes, or even a stroller. But Sav-A-Life provided all of that through their Earn While You Learn program. I received everything I needed just by showing up and being willing to learn.” For her, it wasn’t just about getting baby essentials; it was a powerful reminder that she wasn’t alone. Sav-A-Life was there for every parenting milestone, every fear, and each joyful moment. Today, her daughter Ma’lani is thriving as a 7-year-old second grader, a testament to the support that helped them both grow.

When she was expecting her second daughter, Layla, the pandemic brought new challenges. Shanell felt isolated, balancing work and all the “what-ifs” surrounding her. But she knew Sav-A-Life would still be there. “It was scary,” she says. “But just knowing I had somewhere to go, that I could call anytime for help or prayer—that gave me peace.” In those moments, it wasn’t just Layla’s heartbeat she was protecting. It was her own resolve, her hope, her spirit.

Today, with her son Romyn, now 5 months old, Shanell’s life has transformed. She’s busy, always on the go, and surrounded by the love of her family, including Romyn’s father, who is fully involved. “I don’t feel as lonely as I did before,” she says. “Life is good. I have support now, and my mom and I have healed a lot.” And while she still faces her share of challenges, she knows she has a community at Sav-A-Life that will pray with her, listen to her, and give her the resources she needs to keep moving forward.

Shanell’s journey is a testament that life is indeed “more than a heartbeat.” Every beat represents a choice for life, a family finding hope, and a future brimming with love.

This holiday season, will you be the heartbeat for another mom like Shanell? Every dollar you give empowers a family, surrounds a mother with love, and helps us share God’s message of hope.
