Our History
Sav-a-Life was founded in 1980 by Wales Goebel. In a powerfully convicting encounter, a woman told him, “If someone had been there to help rather than condemn, maybe I would have had a baby rather than an abortion.”
Those words changed Mr. Goebel’s concept of what it means to truly be pro-life. The result is a ministry that addresses the complex range of emotional, physical, and spiritual needs associated with unplanned pregnancies. We don’t just promote a culture of life – our mission is to promote abundant life for all people by sharing the love and truth of Jesus Christ in both word and deed.
As we celebrate our 40th year of ministry, we also celebrate the recent merger of Sav-A-Life, Vestavia with the North Jefferson Women’s Center, to form a brand-new entity. Sav-A-Life, Inc is now the single largest crisis pregnancy ministry in the state. Our campuses in Vestavia and Fultondale are strategically located on the north and south sides of the metro area, to connect with women, men and families facing unplanned pregnancy, and draw them to hear the Gospel.

Dear Friend,
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Sav-A-Life and The Pregnancy Test Center. More than thirty years ago, Wales Goebel answered a call from God to provide a safe haven where women, men, and families facing a crisis pregnancy could turn for help. I don’t think any of us could have anticipated what God was going to do with that vision.
Originally, Sav-A-Life provided a place where young women could come for a free pregnancy test and learn about the positive options available. Through the years, our services have grown beyond the free pregnancy test. We now provide initial prenatal assessment, STD testing, parenting education, fatherhood programming, and much, much more.
Today, pregnancy and STD testing for clients is just the beginning of Sav-A-Life’s involvement. The finishing comes when, after helping the client through pregnancy, we see a beautiful baby and a strong family to care for it. We also see that when a pregnancy is not involved, there are young women and men becoming responsible, productive young adults.
One thing has remained the same through the years — our message of hope, truth, and love that can only be found in a relationship with our Heavenly Father. We express to everyone that comes through our doors that:
You are not alone. (Psalm 46:1; Psalm 147:3)
God loves you and has a plan for your life. (Jeremiah 29:11)
You are one of God’s precious children. (Isaiah 43:1-4)
You are worthy of His love. (Romans 5:8)
